December 2016 President's Update
Happy holidays from the Friends of Westbrook School Foundation (FOWS)! I wanted to take a moment to reach out to our school community to introduce FOWS to those that may be new and provide an update on what we have been up to already this year.
WHAT IS FOWS?
FOWS is a non-profit organization whose mission is to raise funds to support Westbrook Elementary School's facilities and educational programs. FOWS typically focuses its efforts on supporting capital expenditures that are beyond the scope of the Westbrook PTA that meet specific needs as they arise at Westbrook, such as improvements to technology, playground equipment, courtyard maintenance, etc. In 2013, FOWS led a significant campaign to underwrite the costs of an outdoor classroom and to make necessary repairs to Westbrook’s All-Purpose Room. Traditionally, FOWS also offers support to its sister school, Viers Mill Elementary School. We work closely with Westbrook leadership and the FOWS board to determine how our efforts can best serve not only our immediate school, but the entire Westbrook community.
HOW DOES FOWS RAISE MONEY?
Simply put, we have fun! Beyond community donations, FOWS, with the support of many hosts, organize several events we call "COUNT ME IN" Parties, in addition to THE WINTER SOCIAL. The majority of these events take place in the winter/spring season and offer something for everyone. Not only do we have fun, these events support an excellent cause while continuing to bring our community together. See below for more information on The Winter Social and line up of 2017 "Count Me In" parties. Additionally, you can always make a donation to FOWS by visiting our website at www.friendsofwestbrook.org.
2016 CAMPAIGN SUCCESS
In 2016, our fundraising efforts secured enough funds to purchase and install 3 permanent shade structures and an extra tether ball set for our lower playground. Currently, this order is awaiting approval by MCPS and we are hopeful for an early spring installation. Additionally, FOWS supported the school by adding more tables in the lunchroom, paying for courtyard landscaping maintenance and provided our sister school, Viers Mill Elementary, with a check to support their PTA budget. Thank you to everyone who contributed in many ways to make all of this happen last year.
2017 Campaign Goal: Media Center
As mentioned above, the FOWS leadership team works closely with the Westbrook leadership team to determine needs for the school. After receiving information from Ms. Lane and Ms. Curry, the FOWS board voted to focus our fundraising efforts this year on upgrading the Westbrook Media Center. We are still working to assess the full scope of the upgrade, but initially we are looking to provide a "refresh" of this space to make more inviting for our students. Fresh carpet, paint, new furniture and reorganization of the space would do wonders to inspire our students.
